Hello beauties! Lipstick is probably one of my favorite makeup products of all time. After all, I do have a lipstick tattoo! Lipstick has this insane ability to transform your lips, and your entire look. When I feel like going bare faced, I always throw on a lip product of some sort. Today’s post is going to be all about my go-to lipstick routine, because YES…there are multiple steps 😉

1. Prep your lips
First and foremost, I always use a lip scrub before applying lipstick. Lip scrubs help to exfoliate dead skin, and give you a smooth canvas to work on before you put any product on your lips. My two favorites are Bubble Gum Lip Scrub 0.8 oz by LUSH or e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator – Rose. Both are reasonably priced, and perform well.
After I remove my lip scrub, I apply a lip balm to my lips. Truthfully, any lip balm that you have around the house will work for this. If I had to pick favorites, I would reach for either my Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm or my Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Lip Treatment. The Milani Lip Treatment is more affordable, but I swear the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm is SO worth it.
2. Line your lips
My go-to liner for YEARS now has been MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl. It’s the perfect “barely” there color that goes with most nude shades. It adds definition to the lips without being too harsh. I’ve easily bought 20 of these liners throughout the year, and will rarely ever venture out with other ones.
I over line my lips slightly. I usually add a little bit of volume to the sides and corners of my top lip to match my bottom lip. This isn’t necessary for everyone, as I just don’t like the shape of my lips. But if you want to over line, make sure to start out with a little bit at a time. Your pencil needs to be as sharp as possible, and your hand needs to be steady. To help steady your hand, try placing your pinky on your lower chin as you line. This helps to keep the hand still.
3. Fill in with a lipstick
This step is truly up to you in terms of color. You could add something that is a similar color as the lip liner, or something lighter. I always suggest lighter if you’re going for the true “pouty” look. This adds definition to the lips, and adds a slight touch of highlight. bareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Color in Infamous is my go-to. It’s super creamy, long lasting, and so flattering on all skin tones.
4. Add a touch of concealer to the center of your lips
Concealer on the lips? Yep, you heard right! This is one of my favorite tricks for getting that baby doll look on the lips. For this, I used L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer in Light Ivory. Any concealer will do, just as long as it is lighter than your skin. Once you have applied a small amount, take your ring finger and blend it softly. I like to tap it out to prevent smearing and over blending. Tapping also allows for the concentration of the product to stay in the middle of the lips for the poutiest look possible.
5. Add highlighter over the concealer
This is my number one secret to my pouty lip look! Adding in a highlighter makes for such a pretty glow to the lips. When you add highlight to any part of your face, it draws attention to that area, and that’s what we want to do to the center of our lips. For this, I always opt for a liquid highlighter, just for comfort reasons. However, I’ve used powder highlighters and eye shadows in the past. The highlighter I use the most for my pouty lips is the NYX Professional Makeup Away We Glow Liquid Highlighter in Crystal Glare. I personally like this one, because it comes with a doe foot applicator which naturally makes it easier to apply.
6. Add your choice of gloss
The final step is to add any gloss you’d like! If you would prefer to skip this step, that’s okay too. However, I like the look of gloss with this lip routine, because it adds an even bigger element of poutiness, and gives it a bit of a sheen. For this, I again opted for my Milani Lip Oil Treatment, because it’s so soft and stays on really well as a gloss. Any clear gloss will do.
And voila! You’re all done! This is my go-to lip look that I pair with almost every single eye look I do. It goes with everything, and stays on all day long without budging. As someone who doesn’t have extremely big lips, this helps to make them look a lot more plump and defined.
You could really do this exact routine with any shade you wanted to. The formula for this is slightly darker lip liner, lipstick, a small tap of concealer, highlighter over the concealer and gloss over everything. This works with a red lip REALLY well.
